Meet David Heil

Hi Dave! What’s in the mug?

Strong black coffee.

So, what’s your story? What brought you to SG?

I originally started freelance writing for SG when I was completing my Master’s degree at Manchester University back in 2010. When I graduated an opportunity came up to work for the firm full time, initially as maternity cover, and I’ve stayed ever since!

You’ve been here quite a while now, how have things developed?

When I started for the firm there were only three of us which made it quite hectic at times! Obviously, the PR and construction industries have changed significantly in the last eight years which means the focus has shifted towards digital and online content, although we still do a good deal of work with the printed trade press. We’ve been fortunate to work with a number of great firms at various stages in their journey, from creating entirely new brands and websites, to maintaining firms as thought leaders within their field. As the team here at SG has expanded, we’ve been able to widen our offering to clients with new ideas and approaches.

What’s a typical day/week in your role like?

Most of my time is spent on some type of writing whether it be technical articles, blogs, CPDs or case studies. Aside from that, I’m liaising with clients, planning work or keeping on top of the latest issues and developments within the construction and PR industries. I’m also the occasional I.T. helpline for the office.

Not as occasional as you might like! So, what does good account direction look like to you?

It’s crucial to have a clear idea of the core values and objectives of each client to ensure that their vision is carried through in any work we do. This understanding helps to inform which audiences we target, the type of message we’re looking to convey, and which formats will provide the best vehicle for achieving their goals. Regular client liaison is an important part of this process as well as careful monitoring to ensure the methods we use are delivering the results we want.

What have you learnt about office life in your time here?

It runs on caffeine and requires lots of Spotify playlists to power through long pieces!

We’ve all heard you sigh when your headphones run out of battery! Any songs/albums on repeat at the moment?

Negro Swan by Blood Orange.
