Durrington High School in Worthing, West Sussex, has successfully completed work on its expansion, using the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel. The Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) was specified to help target a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating and to achieve excellent fabric performance against a tight project deadline.
The school is now able to accommodate an additional 210 students thanks to a double extension developed by architects, Seaman Partnership, in tandem with West Sussex County Council. The primary extension, situated at the heart of the school, includes laboratories, a performing arts studio, general teaching accommodation, and ancillary accommodation. 600 m2 of the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel in a 142 mm thickness was installed on the steel frame by delivery partners, Thomas Carter, in the school’s three-storey ‘Courtyard’ expansion.
Gareth Phillips, Contracts Manager at Beard Construction, commented:
“The build programme needed to be achieved on a short timescale, and the very challenging lead in times made it trickier to get from order placement to construction commencing on site. Thomas Carter provided us with a timber SIPs solution for the external walls of the new ‘Courtyard’. The Kingspan TEK Cladding System was fixed to the steel frame of the building quickly and the installation was completed to a high standard.”
Delivery Partners, Thomas Carter, added:
“Kingspan TEK panels suited the project as the large format build meant that significant areas of elevations could be installed in one application. Despite starting later than scheduled, the fast and predictable installation was completed on time and ready to hand over to Beard Construction for the next stage.”
The highly insulated core of the 142 mm Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel can allow them to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K and better, whilst their OSB/3 facing and unique jointing system help to minimise unnecessary air loss. This can contribute toward the award of credits within the materials section of the BREEAM assessment.
The Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel is also available in a 172 mm thickness, delivering U-values of 0.16 W/m2.K or better, without the need for additional insulation. The manufacturing facility where the panels are produced carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification. As standard, the OSB/3 facing of Kingspan TEK panels is PEFC certified.
